This Harry Dunn business, what do you make of it?
Firstly an absolute tragedy and we should remember that, the lady should have stayed in the UK and faced justice for which she probably would have got community service.

But what do you make of all this media scrum around his parents and the trip to the US?

Now she and her new husband are blaming the British Government? I understand that she wants justice for her son but this is not how you get it?

Is it all about the fame and money? Horrible thing to say but she is certainly revelling in the attention...or seems to be.

Seems to me the important thing in this sad case is that Harry Dunn's mum believes she has kept her promise to her dead son by achieving "justice". She has IMO conducted herself in a remarkably brave, tenacious and dignified fashion. If this verdict helps her to come to terms with a devastating loss then it is a good thing.

As for the driver in some ways, it might further add to the guilt that she undoubtedly has to live with that not only did she cause the unnecessary death but that her subsequent cowardly action in not facing up to her mistake is yet another unnecessary burden to carry.

Re: This Harry Dunn business, what do you make of it?
It was always going to be a conviction for death by careless (not dangerous) driving, a suspended sentence and a UK driving ban. I said this in a WHO post about 3 years ago. When suspending a custodial sentence, a Judge is obliged by law to say for what special reasons the sentence is suspended, rather than immediate. One such reason is genuine remorse (as opposed to regret for being prosecuted) by the defendant. Today's Judge said remorse was one of the reasons for suspension: that is a lie and a fudge because genuine remorse would be if Secoulas returned voluntarily to the UK to face whatever sentence was coming her way. I think that justice would have been better served by the issue iof an arrest warrant for Secoulas for not coming to court, which would have hung over her for the rest of her life. As it is she has suffered nothing for her offence or her cowardice.

Going back to the original post, this shows that what the parents did is exactly, precisely how you get justice in these cases. Embarrassing the UK and US governments - as recognised by the judge in the case today. Good on the parents.

It's justice in the eyes of the UK law.

I said this when it happened:
"Nothing would happen to her if she was to be found guilty. She certainly wouldn't go in the nick over it."

As sad as it is, she was never going to jail over it. It's not how our justice system works here for incidences like this.

Carve-up. Pre-arranged sentence. No justice.

Julian Assange to be extradited to face charges in US.

Then the US announce that this Woman is to face charges in the UK Courts.

Coincidence?

I have driven a lot in Europe and the USA. There have been one or two occasions in Europe when, starting driving on some back road with no traffic around to remind me, I have set off in the left carriageway, only for a short distance and thankfully without any accident . It's easily done when you are in a right-hand-drive (i.e. UK) car, less so in a left-hand drive car (so it's easy not to do it in America). I once represented a Portuguese lorry driver who, having driven from Lisbon all the way to Oxfordshire, left the M40 and turned onto his first UK single-carriageway road. It was night time and there were no other vehicles about until the next bend, where he killed a driver coming the other way. Even a professional can do it.

Last week our Court allowed for Assange to be tried in the USA and today we have been payed back.

Or you can look upon this as a coincidence.

The next thing will be how disappointed they are with the sentence.

Just in from Twitter

US national Anne Sacoolas is to face magistrates in the UK charged with causing the death of motorcyclist Harry Dunn by dangerous driving.

Mr Dunn, 19, died when his motorbike was in a crash with a car near RAF Croughton, Northamptonshire, on 27 August, 2019.

The case would be heard at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 18 January, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

It is understood Mrs Sacoolas, 44, will appear by video link from the US.

Mr Dunn's mother, Charlotte Charles, said: "My family and I are feeling very emotional and overwhelmed, having just learned the news that Mrs Sacoolas is now to face our justice system.

"It is all that we asked for following Harry's death."

Re: This Harry Dunn business, what do you make of it?
Anybody who thinks they can quietly chip away in the hope they will get some kind of justice without publicity is deluded. The aim of any kind pursuit of justice is to keep it in the public eye.

If you want an example consider Watergate everybody was losing interest the Washington Post kept it in the news, the rest is history and of course there is the McCanns love them hate them, believe them or disbelieve them the story continues

Re: This Harry Dunn business, what do you make of it?
Despite the so-called independence of our prosecutors and judiciary, I am sure that a diplomatic deal has been done. She will plead guilty either to the existing *death by dangerous" charge or (more likely) the lesser charge of "death by careless", and be given a suspended sentence and driving ban (in effect, no punishment at all because she is out of the jurisdiction).

Ferris Bueller did the same in Ireland

Back to this though - the media need stories and they are using these people and have convinced them they are helping them. It’s scummy.

Whenever you have these stories and they don’t quite add up then suspect spies - see also the lady in Iran whose husband keeps going on hunger strike. You’d think by now the British government would just tell him the truth.

She won't be getting any jail time which I imagine the baying public want.

A kid on drugs round my way driving a car that wasn't his, ran over and killed 2 people. He got 12 weeks.
